Five of his children and his second wife were the victims of the "Balding Murders" or "The Flat Iron Murders." Two of his children, Irene and Clifford, eventually recovered after a long, extensive recovery in the hospital. Vernie Lewis was eventually caught, tried, and convicted for the crime.
