Obituary: Gladys May Schneider, one of five children of Orvin and Emma (Gobber) Volker, baptized May 24, 1925 by Rev. Geyer and confirmed February 11. 1940 by Rev. Brokering, both at St. James (Long Branch)Lutheran Church. She attended Rock School Old District #45 near her home.
On August 23, 1945 Gladys was married to Maynard Louis Schneider at Long Branch Church by Rev. Bents. They made their home on a farm south of Johnson, NE. and were blessed with three children. Imogene, Allen, and Dennis. In the summer of 1985 Gladys and Maynard retired from the farm and moved into Johnson, NE.
As a young wife, Gladys could be found working beside her husband on the farm After they moved to Johnson, she looked forward to frying chicken at the White Horse on Saturdays.
Gladys became a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church following her marriage. She was active in the church, including Naomi Ruth Circle and church quilting projects. She also took pride in making quilts on her own for others to enjoy. She belonged to the Red Hat Society and the Johnson Americn Legion Auxiliary, and liked to play cards and complete jigsaw puzzles.
Maynary passed away in January of 2002, and Gladys was able to live in her home until December of 2008, when she became a resident of Ridgeview Towers Assisted Living in Tecumseh, NE. After some health complications arose. Gladys eventually moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn, NE. She passed away there on Sudnay, June 14, 2009 at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 10 days. Other than her husband Maynard, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law John Kalous, and great-grandson Ethan.
Gladys is survived by her daughter and son-iin-law Imogene and Rich Matejka of Lincoln, Ne. sons and daughters-in-law Allen and Jan Schneider of Johnson, Ne. Dennis and Carol Schneider of Johnson, NE. Grandchildren Julie(Cory) Weller; Steve (Anita) Matejka; Anita (Dave) Scheuler: Mike (Chonlada) Morse: Chris (Rochelle) Condon; Amy (Monty)Cassner; Staci (Jason) Keel; Kristi (Scott) Pelican; 15 great-grandchildren: 2 great-great grandchildren: sisters Mildred Kalous of Auburn: Neva and husband Jim Thies of Auburn; brothers Lloyd and wife Donna Volker of Humboldt, Ne. Dean and wife Darlene Volker of Nemaha, NE. nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church near Johnson, Ne. officiated by Rev. Bruce Berggren. Phyllis Davis was organist for congregational hymns and a special hymn by the church choir. Pallbearers were Steve Matejka, Cory Weller, Monty Cassner, Jason Keel, Scott Pelican, Chris Condon, Mike Morse, and Dave Scheuler. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
