Illness Is Fatal To E.L. Elmore

Veteran Highway Patrolman Passes; Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow

Emmett L. Elmore, 61, a member of the Stanislaus County unit of the California Highway Patrol since its inception in 1925 died in his home at 1610 H Street Saturday evening after a short illness.

Elmore had been engaged in law enforcement work here for the past twenty four years.

He served four years as a deputy sheriff under R.L. Dallas, leaving in 1922 to join the Modesto Police Department under Chief Lee Smith.

Elmore was in the police department until 1924, and in 1925 he joined the highway patrol. He was promoted to a sergeant last year.

A native of Salida, he was a member of Modesto Lodge No. 675 FAM: Electa Chapter No. 72, OES and Stockton Scottish Rite bodies.

Besides a widow, Mrs. Leona N. Elmore, he leave his mother, Mrs Cordelia Elmore, and a brother, Orin E. Elmore, all of Modesto. He was a nephew of Mrs. Margaret E. Kerr and Ella Elmore of Modesto, Mrs Emma Dockery of Sanger and Mrs. Susan Hayward of Fresno.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Shannon Chapel with Rev George Harwell of the Centenary Methodist Church and Modesto Lodge No. 675, FAM, in charge. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery.

Sergeant Emmett L. Elmore, a veteran of 23 years of police and traffic officer service, received his promotion to sergeant less than one year before his death.

Sergeant Elmore joined the Stanislaus County Traffic Squad in 1925 and became a CHP officer when the California Highway Patrol absorbed the county units in 1929.

Elmore was 62 years old.

Sidenote: Emmett Lee Elmore did not serve in the U.S. Military. In 1925, he began his employment for the California Highway Patrol; in 1941 he was promoted to Sergeant.
