"William Wolf was born in Maryland, the son of John C. & Eva Waltermyer[sic] Wolf. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Hopewell Township, York County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and black eyes."

His military records claim he was born in Maryland, but his death certificate says York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 7, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
