Loyd W. Baird, 72, of Leavenworth and a resident of the Upper Wenatchee Valley for the past 50 years, died Tuesday morning, August 26, 2003, at his home.

He was born on April 15, 1931 to Albert and Martha (Hatmaker) Baird at Walnut Mountain, Campbell County, Tennessee.

Loyd grew up in the Habersham, TN, area and at the age of 10 worked in a coal mining camp kitchen. At the age of 17 he was employed by the Adam Hollow Coal Mine and in 1953 he moved to Leavenworth.

Loyd was employed by Schmitten Lumber Company in Cashmere. On October 22, 1955 he married Ollie R. Roach at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They made their in the Dryden area. He continued to worked at the lumber mill in Cashmere and later for Pack River in Peshastin until his retirement in 1988. In 1987 they moved to Leavenworth.

He was a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union.

Loyd always said that he'd never saw a stranger. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed the hunting, fishing and camping trips that they took. In later years, he and Ollie enjoyed the traveling throughout the States.

Loyd is survived by his wife, Ollie R. Baird of the family home.

One son, David L. Baird of Ajo, Arizona. Daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Annette and Timothy Carson of East Wenatchee. Three grandchildren, Lindsay, Nicole and Vanessa Carson. Two brothers, Charles Baird of Ypsilanti, Michigan and Jim Baird of Lafollette, Tennessee. He was preceded by one brother and four sisters.

A graveside service of Commemoration to celebrate the life of Loyd W. Baird will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning, August 29, 2003, at the gravesite in the Cashmere City Cemetery, with Pastor Dan Johnson, officiating. Memorials may be made in Loyd's name to the Central Washington Hospital Cancer Care or the Coronary Care; P.O. Box 1887, Wenatchee, Washington 98807.

Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
