On 3 January 1891, Lulu was part of the party of six young people involved in the accident between a sleigh and a train that resulted in the deaths of Henry Learned and Mabel Hinckley. At the time, Lulu is listed as the keeper of the kindergarten boarding house. When the train arrived in Northampton, her injuries were described as cuts about the face and head, a badly swollen left eye from which she might lose the sight, and back pain so that she could not step down from the train.
