"...his bent was toward the majesty of the law, and so he studied law and was admitted to the bar of this state [Alabama] when a young man..." (From his eulogy). When the Spanish-American War began, he volunteered for duty and was enlisted in Company L of the Second Alabama Infantry, and rose to the rank of corporal.
