Hattie Bissell Wilson came from a distinguished American military family. Her great grandfather Captain Ozias Bissell fought in the Revolutionary War. Her grandfather Major Russell Bissell, a veteran of the Revolutionary War and Indian Wars, served as the first commandant of Fort Bellefontaine, near St. Louis. Her great-uncle was General Daniel Bissell, who in 1808 upon the death of his brother Russell was appointed Commander of Fort Bellefontaine and Military Governor of Upper Louisiana by President Thomas Jefferson. Her father Captain Lewis Bissell served with distinction in the War of 1812 and was appointed Commandant of Fort Clark, near Peoria, Illinois.

Hattie grew up in the Bissell Mansion, now an historic landmark in St. Louis, which was built by her father in 1823. She was the daughter of Lewis Bissell and his second wife Mary Jane Seber Douglass. One of at least ten children of Lewis Bissell, Hattie had five siblings and four half-siblings.

On 10 October 1877, Hattie Bissell exchanged nuptials in St. Louis, Missouri, with George Francis Wilson Jr. He was the son of prominent Providence, Rhode Island, manufacturer and entrepreneur, George Francis Wilson Sr., who co-founded the Rumford Chemical Works.

Hattie had the unfortunate experience of outliving her husband and all of their children. Only one of George and Hattie’s three children lived to adulthood: Richard Cheney Wilson (1878-1919), Daisy Lee Wilson (1880-1881), and Earle Douglass Wilson (1882-1892).

In addition to becoming a mother, Hattie taught for a time at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Virginia.
