NOTE - It's believed this Miller family's ethnicity is Scottish. Robert Miller and wife Elizabeth sailed from Scotland to colonial Maryland in the mid 1700s. Their son David was born about 1745 in Prince George's Co., Maryland, and died in the Revolutionary War. David's two sons Robert and John David married two Highfield sisters, Mary and Eleanore. A third sister, widow Sarah Highfield Belt, married Notley Duvall. Duvall was the great grandfather of Lauretta Miller.

In Scotland, Miller is most commonly spelled Millar. Variations include Mylar, Myler, Myllar and more. Some of the Millars of Scotland are a sept -- a branch -- of Scotland's MacFarlane clan.

MEMORIAL - Lauretta* 'Retta' F. Miller was born September 1869 in Lewisburg, Mason County, Kentucky to William H. and Nancy M. (Harrison) Miller. This Miller family is living in Lewisburg in the 1870 census.

In 1880 the Miller family is living in Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky, minus father William and daughter Mary. Nancy was a widow. It's presumed Mary had died.

Retta met Joe Gasdorf in Newport when they were children. They lived very close to each other. On March 9, 1887 in Cincinnati, Ohio they married. To this union came two sons: Joseph Robert and Frank Christopher. They divorced in about 1905.

While married to Joe, Retta worked as a seamstress. After her divorce from Joe, Retta worked in the paint and wallpaper store of her father-in-law Christopher Gasdorf, located at Peeble's** Corner in Cincinnati.

On December 26, 1908 in San Antonio, Texas, Retta married Clarence Walter Huggins (brother of NY Yankees manager Miller Huggins). No children. Retta, Clarence and her son Frank were living in St. Louis in 1910. This was during the same time Clarence's brother Miller was playing baseball for the St. Louis ball team.

Retta and Clarence were living in Detroit when she died of breast cancer on July 21, 1923 at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit. She is buried at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit, section 2, block 8, grave 59. Her burial record incorrectly lists her name as Higgins.
