Doris Darlene Degner, the daughter of Virgil and Mona (Allen) Lowery, was born on December 9,1923, in Oak, Nebraska. She passed away on June 22, 2009, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home, in Deshler, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 13 days.
She attended country school and graduated from Davenport High School in 1941. She was baptized at the age of 17 years and confirmed at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska. Doris taught at a rural school south of Davenport for 2 years. She was united in marriage to Donald Atenhan at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska, on June 20, 1943. This union was blessed with four children: Sheila, Cheryl, Steven and Kevin. Doris and Donald lived in Omaha and Tacoma, Washington while Donald was in the military service before moving to rural Deshler where they took over the family farm. Over the years, Doris worked at the Egg Plant, Deshler Cafe, and the Deshler Broom Factory. Donald passed away on September 19, 1980. Doris was united in marriage to Edgar Degner on May 7, 1982. Doris was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Deshler, the Ladies Aid, the Legion Auxiliary (where she was a member for 63 cont. years), and bridge clubs. She was an excellent pie baker, enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, gardening, canning, flowers and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Cheryl; parents, Virgil and Mona Lowery; husband, Donald Atenhan in 1980; sister, Wanda Biltoft and husband Oscar; husband, Edgar Degner in 2002; Teresa Atenhan; Deloris and Stan Hardgen. She is survived by her children: Sheila Reinke and husband, Miguel Mexia of Mesquite, Nevada; Steven Atenhan and wife, Melissa of Waverly, NE; and Kevin Atenhan and wife, MaryLee of Hutchinson, KS; seven grandchildren: Shelley Jensen and husband, Paul of Omaha, NE; Darin Reinke and wife, Angie of Lincoln, NE; Devin Reinke and wife, Karina of Lincoln, NE; Denise Oriano and special friend, Matt of Iowa City, IA; Scott Atenhan and special friend, Miriam of Lincoln, NE; Ashley Hedden and husband, Ryan of Omaha, NE; and Ryan Atenhan of Chicago, IL; 6 great-grandchildren: Haleigh Jensen, Jaden Reinke, Tyler Reinke, Paige Bradley, Drake Reinke, and Nash Oriano; sister, Rayoma Sykes and husband, Art, brother, Wendell Lowery and wife, Carol all of Davenport, NE; Donald's sister, Mildred and husband, Tom Beckler; and Edgar's sisters, Ruth and Verna; many other relatives and friends.
