James W. Neal, 91, of Crystal River, died June 9, 2009, at Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center. James was born in Calhoun, GA and graduated from Calhoun High School in 1937. He was a star basketball player on the Calhoun team. He enlisted in the US Navy on Dec. 29, 1941, training as a blimp squadron pilot then as a gunner on TBF Avenger PBY. While flying as a gunner on Avengers, he served in a squadron on the USS Ranger, the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Hancock. During the latter part of World War II James transitioned into avionics and became one of the youngest avionics chiefs in the US Navy at that time. At the start of the Korean War, James instructed college graduates who were in training to become officers, teaching electronics and radio technology. In 1958 James started serving as a flight engineer. From June of 1965 until the end of the Vietnam War James served as an air crew chief trainer for flight engineers, load masters, and radiomen. During his career James went around the world on the first USS Coral Sea (CV 43) and twice in C-118's. James retired on February 8, 1977, with the rank of Master Chief after 37 years of service.
James married Filomena Mancini on May 6, 1943. They were married for 65 years. They lived in Providence, RI. James went into the family jewelry business there, and later owned his own jewelry business in Chattanooga, TN, Orlando, FL, and finally Homosassa Springs, FL, in 1983. They had three children, Charlotte Harris (Glenn), Tricia Gray (Bobby) and Jim Neal Jr. (Ann); three grandchildren, Greg and Glenn Harris and Tricia Fowler; Five Great Grandchildren, Tommy, Justin, Isaac, Faith Harris and Robby Fowler. His beloved wife preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2007. James is survived by his sisters Sue Krause (Bill), Marty Edgemon and many nieces and nephews. He was well loved by his many friends, caregivers (Mary and Gail) and comrades in arms from his many years of military service. He will also be missed by his beloved relatives Fanny Delfano and Mary Izzo.
