MARION - T. Carroll Atkinson, Jr., 71, former mayor of Marion, died Saturday at his residence. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Marion Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Richardson-Miles Funeral Home, will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Atkinson was born in Marion County, a son of Troy Carroll and Evelyn C. Rowell Atkinson. He was a graduate of Clemson College, has served as president of the IPTAY Club. He was an army veteran. He served as city councilman in Marion and was mayor for 25 years. He founded Atkinson Implement Co. and was a past president of the Carolinas Farm Equipment Dealers Association.
He served as a state legislator and as a state highway commissioner. He was a member of the housing authority board. the Tobacco Advisory Board and served on the board of directors of Marion National Bank. He was a former chairman of the Federal Farm Credit Board and a past vice president of the Municipal Association of South Carolina. He was a member of the Marion Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a past chairman of the United Way and serves as a board member of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Clinton Lodge and the American Legion. He was an active member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lucia Wyatt Oliver Atkinson; two sons, T. Carroll Atkinson III and John W. Atkinson, both of Marion; a brother, David J. Atkinson of Marion; four sisters, Dorothy A. Hall of Silver Spring, Md., Miriam A. Donovan of Cinnaminson, N.J., Olive A. Nissen, and Gwendolyn A. McCurdy of Charleston; and 5 grandchildren.
