William Jeff Baggett was born in Marion County, Georgia, on September 28, 1848. He moved to Houston, Texas, in 1869, and to San Augustine County a year later and lived there until he moved to Shelby County in 1910. He lived in Shelby County until his death.
Mr. Baggett married Sarah Bodine, and the couple had 3 children. Later he married Miss Effie Snellings, and they had 11 children. Mr. Baggett was a deacon in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church for a number of years.
Survivors included his wife; 11 children (2 from his marriage to Sarah and 9 from his marriage to Effie): John Baggett of San Benito; Tom Baggett of Dona, Texas; Ida (Mrs. C. M.) Tinsley, Ola (Mrs. W. C.) Lovell, Mrs. Mary Johnson, Mrs. Lucille Adams, Mrs. George Barto, and Nellie Baggett of Shelby County; Renzie and Christine Baggett of San Augustine; 3 brothers: Tom and Cage Baggett of San Augustine and Andrew Baggett of Ironosa, Texas; 3 sisters: Mrs. Sallie Epps, Mrs. Catherine Epps, and Mrs. Mattie Bland of Blandlake; 13 grandchildren [including W. C. Lovell, Beeman Lovell, and Lemerle Lovell]; and 9 great-grandchildren.
