Russell's father died when he was 6 years old. His mother remarried a Mr. Eppes and childhood was not easy for the Jones step-children. Russell worked at the local bleachery as a young adult. He then fought in WWI in the US Army. At about age 20 he moved North to Pennsylvania, took a job on the railroad and married Elizabeth Washburn. The marriage was short lived. He later married Pearl Darnell (of Pennsylvania) and ran a grocery store/gas station on the Pa./Ohio border. In later life they moved back to Russell's beloved South Carolina. RB & Pearl enjoyed the good life fishing the Santee-Cooper Reservior.
