Winfield was the son of Cotton and Ann Fletcher (1850 Census: Colchester, Vermont).

On 20 Jun 1861, Winfield S. Fletcher of South Hero, Vermont; enlisted in Company G of the Vermont 2nd Infantry Regiment. On 5 Jul 1861, he was a Corporal. On 5 Apr 1863, he mustered out of service (Vermont Volunteers Rosters).

1891: Adjutant General of New Mexico Territory, appointed by Governor L. Bradford Prince

At the time of his passing on 7 Jun 1904, Winfield was recorded as a Corporal in Company G, 2nd US Infanty when interred in the Santa Fe National Cemetery (Burial Register).
