The first monument erected in town stands at the head of the grave of Soule Cushman, in the “burial yard ” near Rankin's Mills. Time has eſtaced some of the ancient inscription, which once read:“In Memory of Mr. Soule Cushman, died Nov. 15, 1795, AE. 46.Afflictions sore long time I bore, Physicians were in vain, Till Christ was pleased, To give me ease, And free me from all pain.”
