John Right Hobbs was born 04 Dec 1842 in Talledega co., AL, and came to Van Zandt Countyy in November 1850. During the Civil War, he served with the 37th TX Cavalry, Co. G. He marred Amanda A. Mayfield on 27 Feb 1868 in Van Zandt County. She was born 03 Dec 1847 in Alabama, died 12 Apr 1919. He died 03 Jan 1911. They are both buried at Tidmore Cemetery.....Civil War Veteran of Van Zandt Co, TX.
NEWS ARTICLE: "Elder John R. Hobbs of Mars, TX; Among the substantial and useful citizens of Van Zandt County, loved and honored, is mr. Hobbs. The family came from Alabama, where William Hobbs, his grandfather, who was a good old-time farmer, lived and died. Louis Harrison Hobbs was the father of John R. Hobbs, and was reared in Logan County, Kentucky, but died in Texas. He wa a farmer and came to Texas in 1850 along with families of Rileys, Sides, etc. He married Miss Wincey Sides, who was reared in Alabama. There were married in 1836 and became the parents of fourteen children. They died in Van Zandt County. He died January 15, 1874, and she died Sept 25, 1896. John R. was born in Talledega, Alabama on December 4, 1842. He was 18 years old when he came to this county where he was educated. He adopted the vocation of farming, and has engaged in it ever since he was large enough to perform its required duties. Feb 27, 1868, he married Miss Amanda A. Mayfield, and they have three chilren. Elder Hobbs has therefore lived in Van Zandt County fifty-three years, and is universally regarded as a man of rare wisdom and great usefulness. He is a minter of the gospel, having been ordained to the gospel ministry in June 1899, since which time he has been extraordinarily zealous in his ministerial work. He served in the Confederate army as a private soldier, and bore the hardships of soldier life and well performed his duties as a good soldier. He has 156 acres in farm land near Mars. He is happy and contented, and in many respects furnishes a good model for the rising generation around him. He is prudent, wise and generous. He has a good constitution and it is be hoped that he may be spared for many years to perform the services into which he was so tardy in entering. He is loved and honored by his neighbors and is doing great good in the religious development of the country in which he lives."...from the Southland Newspaper ,ca 1904
