The following information is taken from an article regarding his death that was published February 11, 1921 in the Florence Times:

Mr. McFarland died from injuries he received while working on the construction of the Wilson Dam. He was struck from behind by a construction train car. He was 42 years of age and was born and raised in Florence. He also served a number of years in the military. He was an officer in Co. K, 2nd Regiment, Alabama National Guard and served throughout the period of service on the Mexican border, and then he was transferred to the U.S. Army and promoted to first lieutenant during his service in the great war.

On the 10th of March, 1920 he married Miss Beulah Ferguson of Jonesburg, Missouri, and a baby girl was born to the happy couple only a couple of weeks before his untimely death. He was also survived by a brother, W. F. McFarland and two sisters.
