PORT HENRY -- Yet another member of "the greatest generation" has become a part of history. Francis R. Carpenter, 89, formerly of Port Henry, N.Y., and for the past five years a resident of the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y., died Thursday, July 24, 2008.

Francis was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 1, 1944. He was attached to the 102nd Infantry Division, 405th Regiment, Company F. He attained the rank of PFC and served in central Europe, the Rhineland. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and was decorated with the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal; the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1946.
Francis spent the greater part of his working years as an employee of Republic Steel Corporation, retiring as a millwright.
Francis married his second wife, Anna K. Treadway, in 1974. They spent more than 30 years together until he broke his hip, which necessitated his being placed in the Horace Nye Home.
Francis was predeceased by his first wife Mary in 1973; his son James in 2002; his second wife Anna in 2007; and his brother Carl in 2006.
