Glenn O. "Slim" Carothers, 78, of 285 Indiana Ave. died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at St. Mary Medical Center.

Born June 24, 1920, in English, Ind., to William V. and Ada N. Cuzzart Carothers, he married Gloria Shiner on July 27, 1946, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Anthony of Colorado Springs, Colo., Paul of Atlanta, Ga., and James of Galesburg; four daughters, Glennda Driffill, Mary Simkins and Anita Norris, all of Galesburg, and Annette Johnson of Gilson; and one sister, Esther Speedy of Tazwell, Ind.

Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

A former member of the United Steelworkers Union, he was a crane operator for Butler Manufacturing for 34 years, retiring in 1980. A World War II Army veteran, he received two Purple Hearts. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and Knoxville American Legion Post 749. He also was a member of Knoxville Mason Blue Lodge; Pacific Masonic Lodge 66; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria; Mohammed Temple, Shrine, in Peoria; Legion of Honor; Galesburg Bethel White Shrine; and Vesper Masonic Lodge 584. He was a former member of Knox County Posse and Little John Conservation Club.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Galesburg American Legion Post 285.
