Jim was born Jan. 2, 1937, in New Bremen to Robert A. and Katherine (Tangeman) Cooper and was raised in New Bremen, graduating with the class of 1955. On July 6, 1957, he married Janet "Becky" Westerbeck, and had just celebrated 52 years of marriage. She survives in Ponca City.
He is also survived by five children: Laura Hobler and husband Jeff of New Knoxville, Ohio; Ellen Nowlin and husband Kenneth of Olympia, Wash.; Eileen Imwalle and husband David of Tulsa; Lynda Cooper of New Bremen, Ohio; and Robert Cooper of Tulsa; two sisters, Anna Mae Hudson and husband James of New Bremen, Ohio; and Marlene Lammers and husband Dennis of New Knoxville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Albert Knost.
He served as chief of police for the village of New Bremen from 1958 to 1970, followed by 2 years as Street Superintendent. Following his civic duties, he owned and operated a construction business from 1972 until 1981. He then moved to Ponca City and continued his construction business there. He returned to New Bremen in 1994 to work for H.A. Dorsten to focus on building nuring homes until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of Woodlands Christian Church in Oklahoma and a former member of St. Peter's Church, New Bremen.
He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed fishing and working in his pecan and apple orchards.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug., 1, at Woodlands Christian Church in Ponca City with the Rev. Paul Krueger officiating.
Services in Ohio are 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, at St. Peter's Church, New Bremen, the Rev. Stephen Wills and Rev. Paul Krueger officiating. A private family burial will be held at the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen at a later date. Calling is 4–7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
