Died June 29, 1891 of consumption, Charles E Hawkes age 88 years 4 months 16 days; he was the eldest son of Lewis Hawkes, was born Feb 14, 1853, married in 1877 to Miss lzora R Colby, daughter of Elijah Colby of Sardinia, their union was a happy one; Mr. Hawkes, was a school teacher and enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most accomplished scholars in the county and as a teacher he had no superior, being dearly beloved by all his pupils; his name was prominently mentioned for a number of years as a candidate for school commissioner; he has held a number of town offices all of which he filled with credit. At the age of thirteen he experienced religion and at fifteen joined the Christian Church at Eest Holland and has always been a firm and devoted member. For a long time he had been confined to his bed suffering intensely; but he bore with Christian resignation; feeling that this was his last illness he arranged his business according to his wishes so as to leave nothing undone; but a short time before bis death he announced to his friends that his time on earth was short-but he was ready to meet God in peace. Mr. Hawkes was a pronounced temperance man, a member of the East Holland Lodge of Sons of Temperance, being P. W. P. at time of his death, he was also a correspondent for INDEPENDENT and his bright and newsy reports will be greatly missed by its readers. The funeral was held at the Christian church July 1, Rev. Mr. Childs of the Christian church officiating; the church was filled with mourners, who gave manifestations of their grief especially his late scholars. Interment in Protection cemetery; he was the fifth child of the same family to die of consumption; he leaves a wife and one son Lewis Jr. age 18, besides other relatives and friends without number to mourn his departure.
