Shepard's Point was the name of the 1853 Donation Land Claim property of William T. Shepard's parents, Henry and Lucinda Nelson-Shepard. Today that property is the City of Stevenson.
There was a small burial plot at Shepard's Point with the headstones and graves of Lucinda Shepard and two of her daughters, Embrasella and Malisia. Also in the plot were two unmarked graves. They all needed to be moved or they would soon be under water. The only living relative in 1974 was a 66 year old granddaughter who, at age 8, had moved from Stevenson to Goldendale, Washington. She was contacted and thought that one of the unmarked graves was that of her Uncle William and the second, possibly a neighbor, who Miss Shepard could not remember.
Lucinda's and the two daughter's graves and headstone were moved about one mile east to the Stevenson Cemetery. The two unmarked graves were also moved, a new headstone was made for "William T. Shepard" and the remains were put in new unmarked grave.
The headstone at the Iman Cemetery has an older look to it than the one in the Stevenson Cemetery and it is my thought that William is probably buried at the Iman Cemetery. Henry & Lucinda also had a son born about 1856, named Henry Jr, who drowned at a young age in the Wind River. So far, Shepard researchers have not been able to find a grave, record of his death or any information on the whereabouts of Henry Jr. I have always wondered if it might have been Henry Jr that was buried in one of the unmarked graves at Shepard's Point and then was moved to the Stevenson Cemetery and got the new headstone with William's name on it. That why we keep looking.
