He was the son of Wiley Preston Keel/Keele and Martha Ferrell.
At some point his family moved to Benton County Arkansas.
1870 Arkansas census listed the Children as:
Eliza Jane, (b. 1863 TN), Bedford Forrest, (b. 1865 AL), and Sarah R. (b. 1869 AR).

Both parents died when the children were young. They were taken in by relatives. Bedford was raised by John and Rhoda Keel Foster
