Greenwood SC, Jan. 18 [1950] - John Griffin Adams, 94, one of the county’s oldest citizens, died Tuesday night [January 17, 1950] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Cason, following five days serious illness. Mr. Adams was born in Madison FL, Jan 7, 1855, a son of Mary Chatham and Thomas Jefferson Adams, both of Edgefield County. He spent most of his life in Greenwood County and was a farmer. Mr. Adams was one of the last two surviving members of the Red Shirt Company of Ninety Six and was also the oldest surviving student of Old Woodville Academy at Phoenix. His wife, Mrs. Charlcey Hasting Polatty Adams died Nov. 11, 1948.

Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Cason; two sons, John and B. F. Adams of Greenwood; a step-daughter, Mrs. G. E. Thomas of Madison FL; a step-son, Joel P. Polatty, Fernandina FL; a sister, Mrs. Ola Prince of Edgefield; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services in Fellowship Cemetery. Mr. Adams was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church.
