Naomi was the daughter of Harriet Frances Murphy and William Montgomery Pike.
Naomi was just two years old in May 1846 when her parents joined the Donner Party in Kansas bound for California. They were part of an extended Murphy family of thirteen. Of the ninety-one people who embarked for California, only forty-nine survived the winter of 1846-47. The group was trapped in the snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for four months. Of the thirteen Murphys, six perished. Naomi's father died in a shooting accident near Reno, Nevada, in October 1846 just before the wagon train entered the mountains. At the snow-bound camp, Naomi lost her grandmother Levinah Murphy, her baby sister Catherine Pike, her uncles John and Lemuel Murphy, and cousin Jeremiah Foster.
Naomi and her mother Harriet were rescued in March 1847 and brought to Sutter's Fort at Sacramento. In June 1847, Harriet married Michael C. Nye who had come to California in 1841. Naomi's aunt Mary Murphy said that he loved Naomi as well as if she was his own child. Naomi was often called "Naomi Nye." The Nye family moved to Marysville (named for Mary Murphy) in Yuba County, California, by the time of the 1850 U.S. Census.
Naomi married Benjamin Mitchell, a physician, in Marysville in 1864, and soon after they relocated to The Dalles, Oregon. Michael and Harriet Nye followed them to The Dalles. Benjamin Mitchell died after 1870, and about 1877 Naomi married John S. Schenck, then an agent of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Co. Schenck later became President of The Dalles First National Bank. When Schenck died in 1913 he left Naomi a wealthy widow, but she was impoverished by the stock market crash of 1929. She had no children by either of her husbands.
When Naomi passed away in The Dalles in 1934 at the age of 90, her death was widely reported in California newspapers. With her death, only one survivor of the Donnor Party remained alive, Isabella Breen McMahon, who passed away in 1935 in Hollister, California, marking the end of an era.
