Elizabeth Harriet Clevenger, 91, died Monday morning, May 11, 2009, at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville, OH.
She was born in Council Grove, KS, April 21, 1918 to the late Charles and Anna Rotchford. She grew up in the Big John community and graduated from Council Grove High School in 1937.
Elizabeth worked as a secretary in the Welfare Office of the courthouse for several years, and during World War II worked for the U.S. Air Force in the production control and intelligence department. At the end of the war she became a transcript clerk in the registrar's office at Kansas State University, Emporia, and from there she went to Topeka and worked for the Hussey Insurance Agency as a bookkeeper and cashier.
She married Harold Clevenger in Topeka on Aug.8, 1948 and moved to Union City, IN. She worked for the Backstay Welt Company in the office for 13 l/2 years.
They moved to the Bartonia Community where they farmed from 1956 to 1980. Upon retiring they moved to Wayne Lakes, Greenville, OH, and spent summers there and winters at their home in Lakeland, FL. Harold passed away in January of 1987. She moved back in 1992 and lived at Wayne Lakes (Greenville) until 1999 when she moved into the retirement village in Union City, IN.
She is a past member of the Topaz Club and National Secretaries Association of Emporia; past member of the Women's Insurance Association of Topeka; past member of the Singles and Women's Auxiliary of Woodbrook Estates, Lakeland, FL., where she spent 12 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Union City, IN, having served on the board of deacons and elders and president of the Foster Auxiliary. She is a charter member of the Morris County Historical Society of Council Grove, and contributed many items to the Post Office Museum and attended its dedication in 1989.
Elizabeth was a member of Cheer Guild and made items for children for Riley hospital in Indianapolis, IN. since 1993. She contributed quilts to Fairmont Friends Church in Fairmont, IN. along with her friend Mary Evans. They made quilts for the Ronald McDonald House and the Indian Missions in the south.
She loved flowers, birds, nature and doing handwork, especially greeting cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert and her husband Harold, and is survived by a step-daughter and two step-grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.
There will be no visitation or services. Burial will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Harold Clevenger Scholarship, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL 62901.
Services have been entrusted with the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenvile, OH.
