Ezra Annes was born in Vermont in 1796 and settled in Whitby in 1819. He was one of the founders of the Masonic Lodge in Whitby in 1825 and the grammar school in 1846. He served as mayor of the Town of Whitby in 1857, but died while in office on August 25, 1857 and is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.

From his obituary:

Death of Ezra Annes, Late Mayor of Whitby

"The demise of this much lamented gentleman took place at his residence in the town of Whitby on Tuesday last. Mr. Annes had been ailing for a considerable time. Before his election to the office of mayor eight months ago, his health was impaired.

Another photo to try to help with legibility.
The date almost looks like it says March 9
If I am right about the date, then the date does not match up with the date recorded for his death, however since this cemetery wasn't erected until 1846 it could not be his father as the father passed in 1806 in Verrmont.

It is had to read, however when we were there we were quite confident that the stone says Ezra .... Annes
We were unable to make out the date.
I can see 'Ezra' and a middle name that looks something like 'MARIS' and a last name 'ANNE' when I touched the stone I could feel the grooves where the 'S' in ANNES was.
The stone is laying on the ground and is directly below the stone for George Annis (Spelled with an 'I').
This section of the cemetery is very old.
