Sharon, PA - Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Coulter Funeral Home for Joseph Spencer, 86, of 632 E. State Street, retired president of the Protected Home Mutual Life Insurance Company, who died of an apparent heart attack at 2:15 p.m. Monday in Sharon General Hospital. Mr. Spencer was born Oct. 5, 1885, in Sharon, a son of John S. and Miriam Lowndes Spencer. He was a patient in the Clepper Convalescent Home for almost two years. He retired in 1959 as president of the firm which was called the Protected Home Cirle prior to its mutualization. He first was employed at the former American Steel and Wire Co., Farrell, and then became associated with his father in operating Spencer's Market on W. State St. He became a traveling auditor for Protected Home Circle in 1926. He advanced in the firm and in 1943 was elected to the board of directors, becoming board president in 1951. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he taught the Men's Bible Class for 30 years. He was active in athletics at Sharon High School where he was graduated in 1905. He also graduated from Sharon Business College. He was a former director of Merchants and Manufacturers National Bank and the former Valley Savings and Loan Association. He was a member and former officer of Sharon Lodge 250, F & A M, and Royal Arch Chapter 244. He also was a member of Rebekkah Commandry 50, Knights Templar. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Clayton Swickard of Adrian, Michigan, and Mrs. Willis Brooks of Alhambra, California, a brother Albert of Elizabethtown PA, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 nd 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
