Evan is a son of Henry Edmond Walters Thomas and Many Jane Nibley Maughan. He grew up in Teton, Idaho with his four siblings: Mary Jane, Lorin Henry, Margaret, and Effie.
Evan enlisted in the US Army on November 6, 1917 and served with the infantry in Germany during World War I. He was discharged on August 31, 1919.
He came home to Teton and worked as a farm laborer and a sheepherder.
He died of broncho pneumonia and alcoholism.
