From the Boston Recorder (Boston, Mass) Dec. 31, 1857:
James Stone, M.D.
Died, in Phillipston, December 18th, Dr. James Stone, aged 74 years and 10 months. The deceased practiced in Phillipston as a physician, for nearly half a century; and, during this long period, he was a leader both in political affairs and in all matters which concerned the public welfare. He was active in efforts to benefit others. He was a steadfast advocate of temperance and sound morality, a zealous supporter of the institutions of religion, and a friend of good men. In his old age he retained his bodily vigor in a remarkable degree, continuing to fill his accustomed prominent place in the choir every Sabbath, and to attend diligently to the duties of his profession and his other business, until the beginning of last spring, when the progress of disease compelled him to retire from active life. His funeral took place on Sabbath afternoon, Dec. 20th, in the Congregational Church, where he had so long attended public worship. The large assembly present at the funeral, including many from adjacent towns, and several of his professional brethren, testified the respect in which he was held, and the loss which not merely kindred and neighbors, but the public, have sustained in his death.
