Gaylord lived in Graham for many years. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was a member of the Young County Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8567 and the First Baptist Church in Graham.

Survivors at time of death included one daughter, Gay Wonsang and husband Willmer of McKinney, Texas; one son, Ricky Byers of Arlington, Texas; and a sister Bernice Lovell of Graham.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mina Bea Byers in 1997 and by a sister, Hazel Fitzgerald Jones in 1994.
