Obit:
Joshua D. Best, 65 years old, of Holland, died of an abscessed liver condition at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau Monday night. He had been in failing health three years, his condition having been serious for a month.
Born in Belgrave, Canada, on June 15, 1874, he came to Battle Creek, Mich., with his parents when four years old. In 1890 the family moved to Sikeston, where on September 30, 1897, he married Miss Georgia Smith.
When he lived in Sikeston, he was a lumber inspector for a time, moving to Holland, Missouri in 1917. There he operated a drug store for several years. Mr. Best had always taken an active part in the improvement of that city, and at the time of death was mayor. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Masonic Order at Steele.
The body was removed to the family home late Tuesday afternoon, where funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with Rev. W.C. Thorpe conducting the services. Burial was made in the Sikeston City Cemetery. The Masonic Order of Steele held burial rites at the cemetery.
Mr. Best is survived by his wife, Mrs. Georgia Best; six daughters: Mrs. E.N. Blumer, of Cape Girardeau; Mrs. C.D. Edwards and Miss Georgia Mae Best, of St. Louis; and Mrs. C.B. Coleman and Misses Geneva and Wanda Best, of Holland; one son, Richard Best, of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Gossett of Cape Girardeau and Mrs. Wm. Leslie of Delta; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two children died in infancy and a brother, Richard Best, died in 1920.

Suggested edit: Joshua's mother was Lydia Jane Pethwick/ Pethick was born May 5, 1847 in Upper Canada and died May 28, 1887 probably Cass City, Michigan.
For those who may be interested in following the Pethick family line, Lydia’s parents are buried in Zion Cemetery, Hope Township, near the south east corner, beside John Best’s tombstone (no immediate relation), where the author happened by chance upon their nearly sodded over flattened forgotten tombstones. Elizabeth, Lidia’s mother, had apparently died at 35 years of age, when Lidia was only three years old, in 1852. Phillip married again to Margaret ???, who also died at age 35, in 1865 and is buried beside Phillip and Elizabeth. Other Pethick families were homesteading in Durham County at the time. After some minor excavation and cleaning, the stones were mostly legible-
