Leroy Thomas Harris' parents are Charles and Mary (Ramsey) Harris, and his parents were married 9 May 1820 in Botetourt, Virginia. They had six children: Charles T b 1824, Elijah Ramsey b 1828, Wesley b. 1830, William Pleasant b. 1834, Leroy Thomas b. 1826 and Edward b. 1839.

Lucy Simpson placed the information for Leroy on Findagrave.com and requested a photo. When the exact burial plot was finally found, it was marked in the photo with a flag. Then after coordination by many individuals, researchers and the findagrave memorial, Leroy Thomas finally in May, 2013, received the marker he so deserved because he served in the Civil war as a U.S. Confederate Soldier.

Thomas served as a private in Capt. Griffin's Company, also known as the Salem Flying Artillery, of the Virginia Light Artillery, and he participated in four or five major battles including Gettysburg. He was at Appomattox when Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Gen. U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865.

During the Memorial Day holiday 2013, at a special dedication ceremony for him and receiving his tombstone, soil from his family's farm in Botetourt, Virginia, which is where he lived when he was mustered in to be a confederate soldier, was scattered and mixed with the soil on his grave. On that day he finally received recognition and honor in the presence of many family members including a grandson who was his namesake.
