Andrew Chochol was the son of John Chochol and Susan "Susie" Mraz.

ANDREW J. CHOCHOL

Andrew J. Chochol, 83, of Lorain, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain after a brief illness.

Born in Lorain, he had been a lifelong Lorain area resident. Mr. Chochol served with the Army Air Corps during World War II as a staff sergeant with the 558th Bomb Squadron and 387th Bomb Group. He was a tail gunner and armorer aboard B-26 Marauder bombing planes and participated in more than 47 missions in the Ardennes, central Europe, Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Chochol worked as a crane operator in the BOP Shop at U.S. Steel in Lorain for 43½ years, retiring in 1983. He attended SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Sheffield Township. He was a life member of VFW Post 451 in Lorain, and a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and member of the B-26 Marauder Historical Society. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marie (nee Puskas); son Kenneth A. Chochol of Waterford, Mich.; daughters Sandra J. Arapp of Uniontown and Sharon M. Nowicki of Lorain; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth Mack of Amherst and Mary Simko of Avon. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Chochol; parents John and Susan (nee Mraz) Chochol; brother John Chochol; and sisters Suzanna Chochol in infancy and Julia Bendik.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave. in Lorain, where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Edgar Anthony, pastor, SS. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township, where VFW Post 451 will conduct military honors.

LORAIN -- Andrew J. Chochol, 83, of Lorain, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Community Health Partners Hospital, Lorain, after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Lorain and was a lifelong resident of the Lorain area.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and won decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He held the rank of staff sergeant in the 558th Bomb Squadron and 387th Bomb Group and was a tail gunner and armorer on B-26 Marauder bombers, participating in 47 missions in over Europe. He also received the Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters, European-African-Middle Eastern service ribbon with four bronze stars and Good Conduct and World War II Victory medals.

Chochol worked at U.S. Steel's Lorain Works for 43 years, retiring in 1983 as a crane operator in the basic oxygen process shop.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451, Lorain, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart; and a member of the B-26 Marauder Historical Society. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Sheffield Township and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Marie (nee Puskas); son, Kenneth A. Chochol of Waterford, Mich.; daughters Sandra J. Arapp of Uniontown and Sharon M. Nowicki of Lorain; sisters Ruth Mack of Amherst and Mary Simko of Avon; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Chochol; his parents, John and Susan (nee Mraz) Chochol; brother, John Chochol; and sisters Julia Bendik and Suzanna Chochol in infancy.

Friends may call Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m., at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where services will be Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Edgar Anthony, pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, with military honors by VFW Post 451.
