According to his death certificate, he was the son of Lafayette Ashby and Miria Crabtree both born in Kentucky. According to the 1940-1946 Bisbee City Directories, he was a farmer and lived with his wife Nellie C. at 41B J. E. T. Street in the Johnson Addition. He was listed as retired in 1946. Also residing at this address was son Clell O. Ashby, Safeway meatcutter. Hess had lived in the Bisbee area (Johnson Addition) for 22 years at the time of his death owing ot coronary thrombosis. Buried 10/18/1949.
