Sequim, Washington resident Harlan "Hank" Verne Luce died peacefully on June 10, 2009, in Olympic Memorial Medical Center, Port Angeles, Washington. He was 80. He was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Readfield, Maine, to Linwood and Edna (Miller) Luce. After two years with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was a chemical engineer in Searsport, Maine, for 39 years. He took an early retirement and moved to Fairbanks, where he remained until health conditions brought him to the Olympic Peninsula in 2004. Mr. Luce is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 46 years; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Nathanael Vereide of Sequim, Washington; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jennifer Luce of Wasilla, Alaska; daughter, Janet Luce of Copper Center, Alaska; son, Dana Luce of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister, Carol "Cal" Small of Homestead, Florida; and three grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 20, at Sequim Valley Foursquare Church, 9090 Old Olympic Highway, Sequim, Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Samaritan's Purse International, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607.
