Civil War veteran for the Union; he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 2nd Minnesota Cavalry, when he was 31 years of age. He was mustered in on December 23, 1863 and was discharged for disability on December 26, 1864.

He was first married to Emeline Dilley, who is also buried in Oak Grove cemetery. He later married Lucinda Guimont-Demo, who was born on March 11, 1852 and died on March 3, 1936. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1910. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage.
