Edwin Forrest "Shock" Hall was 85 years old when he died in 1941 so he would have been born in 1856. He was an early day cowboy and rancher in Wyoming and South Dakota in the Cheyenne River country. He came to the frontier about 1875 from Missouri. He was foreman for the Union Cattle Co. when the Bridle Bit and the S and G consolidated.

He was one the cowboys in Captain Seth Bullock's Cowboy Brigade that rode in the inaugural parade for Teddy Roosevelt in Washington D.C. in March or 1905. He was a world class roper and roped well into his late 70's.

His second wife was the former Elta M. Drew, one-time school teacher and superintendent of schools in Custer county, South Dakota.

He ranched on Rabbit Creek in Perkins, County South Dakota.

He derived his nickname from his intense devotion to a character of the same name in "The Hoosier Schoolmaster".

E. F. "Shock" Hall was the honor guest at a birthday party at his home in Perkins county, Tuesday, October 4, where a large number of his relatives and friends brought filled baskets and gathered to help him celebrate his eighty-second birthday anniversary. A ten-gallon Stetson hat was presented to him by the self-invited guests.

Mr. Hall was born in Missouri, coming to South Dakota, early in his youth where he was affiliated with cattle ranching throughout the Black Hills. During the middle 80's he was foreman of the S & G Cattle Co., near Custer, later joining Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders for active service for his country. Mr. Hall relates many interesting anecdotes of his trip to Washington D. C., following the war, where he, with other members of the Rough Riders, was welcomed by President Roosevelt and offered the key to the capitol coty for the duration of their stay.

Early in the history of Perkins county, Mr. Hall built up his present ranch at Antelope creek south of Bison, where he has made his home since that time. His friends are numbered by his acquaintances. The Bee joins them in wishing him many more happy birthday anniversaries.
