Obituary: David McKay Barlow

Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, David McKay Barlow, age 82, passed away March 4, 2002 surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

He was born May 13, 1919 in Bountiful, Utah to Lucy Ann Garrett and Edmund Francis Barlow. He was the eighth of nine children. He had six sisters and two brothers. His childhood was spent in Bountiful surrounded by family. When his eldest brother, Ed, moved to Santa Monica California the rest of the family followed. His teenage days and early adult years were spent in Santa Monica. Baseball was his love growing up. He spent every spare moment playing ball. Later, McKay, as his mother called him, was introduced to basketball and he became a semi- professional player. He was also known as "Mac" by many friends and family members.

David served a full-time mission to the Northern, States Mission from May 1941 to June 1943 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Mildred Elaine Allen on June 3, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple the day after he returned from his mission and divorced five years later. They had two children, Deborah Elaine and David McKay Jr. He then married Carol Blackmore August 16, 1952 and later divorced in 1965. Together, on August 7, 1955 they had one daughter, Kay Jean. On January 20, 1968, David married Ruth E. Morley. He cherished her with all his heart, they were truly in love. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. They resided in Clearfield. She passed away in June 1995. He was an active church member in the 7th ward. He was the heart of our family and will be remembered for his loving and nurturing ways. He provided us with a haven where we could share his gentle strength and unconditional love. We will remember him always for the jokes and hugs we received upon arrival at his home where we shared so many delicious meals and family holidays. He loved life, family, his home, his Savior and the church. The last several years of his life he enjoyed his temple assignments in the Ogden Temple. He also enjoyed eating breakfast at the Star, bowling, reading, crossword puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, sports especially the Braves baseball games and the JAZZ. His light heartedness and joking personality was always welcomed. He never missed any of his grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Later in life he faced the challenges of respiratory problems and congestive heart failure with determination, grace, and humor he died peacefully at home. He will be missed very much. The family would like to thank his very special neighbors, professional assistants and caregivers, who helped out in his time of need.

He is survived by one brother, I. Haven Barlow (Velma), Layton; one sister, Lucy Hansen, Arvada, CO; two daughters, Deborah Elaine Johnston (Richard), Yucaipa, CA; Kay Jean Suaza (Michael) Thousand Oaks, CA; one son David McKay Barlow Jr. (Lorraine), Camarillo, CA; one step-daughter, Judith Ann Hill (John), Mt. Pleasant; 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
