He was born June 15, 1915, in Catawba County to the late Blanche Scronce Johnson and Roscoe Johnson.
He lived the majority of his life in the Plateau community until his wife died in 2006 and then moved to Kingston Residence. Mr. Johnson was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 1264th Engineer Combat Battalion in Germany, France and England. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong member of Plateau United Methodist Church in Vale where he was a past member of the administrative board and the United Methodist Men. He retired after 20 years of service at Jackson Buff in Conover. He was a loving husband and father and was an avid gardener.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sue Waterson Johnson; sisters, Mamie Shuford, Geneva Frye, Mary Auton and Laura Ward; and a brother, Marshall Johnson.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Peggy Johnson of Conover; sisters, Betty Hefner and husband Bill of Hickory and Thelma Cordell of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, Craig Frye of Wilmington; a sister-in-law, Mary Johnson of North Myrtle Beach; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Plateau United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Petree officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
