Samuel S. Canby came to Olney in 1863 and began the study of medicine with Drs. French & Lemen. In 1869 he began practicing medicine. In 1876 he went to St. Louis to attend Missouri Medical College, graduating in 1878.
In the 1880 Census of Richland County, the family of Samuel S. Canby is shown in Fairview (now Calhoun), Madison Township. Later the Canbys moved to Bonpas Township, where Dr. Canby built a large home about a mile north of Red Head School The house was built to accommodate his family and perhaps some patients who needed extra attention.
