John C. Graves, 93, of Gower, MO, died Saturday, March 8,1997, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

He was a descendant of an early pioneer family that came to the Gower area in 1840. The son of Nathaniel Lee and Pearl (Alien) Graves, he was born on March 4,1904, on the family farm southeast of Gower. At the age of 4, the family moved to a farm north of Lawson. John attended the Banisville School, was a member of the Bamsville Church and graduated from Lawson High School in 1922. He later attended Kansas State College, William Jewell College and the University of Missouri in Kansas City.

On December 24, 1927 he was united in marriage to Lena Watson. After their marriage they lived in Lawson and Kansas City and in 1933 they moved to the Gower community where they made their home. His wife, Lena, passed away on July 25,1985.

John worked for the Burlington-Northern Railroad as a train engineer for many years. After he retired from the railroad he was a train engineer at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City for over 12 years.

John was a supporter and attended the Gower Goodtimer's as long as his health permitted. In his younger days, John enjoyed playing the piano, guitar, violin and trombone. He also collected and refinished antique furniture. He and his wife, Lena, had many fine antique including a large clock collection.

John was a member of the Lathrop Antique Car, Tractor and Engine Association and the Gower Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers, Jewel!, Roy and Allen Graves, one sister, Goldie Graves and one grandson, Jim Pollard.

He is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws, John E. and Margery Graves, Newton, Iowa, and Jim and Jayne Graves, Fresno, California, a daughter, Mary Lu Graves, Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann and Carl Chalupa, Ogden, Utah, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Ruth Ballentine, Hemet, California, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held, Tuesday, March 11,1997, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Gower, with burial at the Alien Cemetery, Gower.
