(Falls City Journal ~ June 4, 1948):

The victim of a heart attack, Herbert B. Burke, 54, Rulo, died at 6:45 o'clock last evening en route to Falls City to consult a doctor.

Mr. Burke complained of pain in his left shoulder and arm about 5:30 o'clock and a doctor was called at Falls City for an appointment. He was being brought to Falls City by his son, Andrew Burke, when he suffered the fatal attack near the Rulo Cemetery.

Mr. Burke was born January 20, 1894 at Amazonia, MO. At the age of 18, he went to work for the C.B. & Q. division in St. Joseph as a telegraph operator in 1912. In 1914 he transferred to the Wymore division and went to work at Rulo. Since 1927 he had been the agent.

Mr. Burke served in World War I as a signalman in the 141st field artillery. He entered the service in June, 1918. After serving six months in the United States, he was sent to France where he served as an instructor in a school of international code. He was discharged in June, 1919. He returned to Rulo and since had lived there.

November 16, 1922 Mr. Burke was married to Gertrude Schroeder of Rulo.

Mr. Burke was active in civic affairs at Rulo. He had served on the school board as president for 12 years. He was president of the Rulo Cooperative Bank for four years and served as director prior to being president. He formerly was a member of the Falls City Rotary Club.

Mr. Burke, a talented pianist, studied music under Prof. Krumme in St. Joseph and continued his studies at the Conservatory of Music in Paris, France. He was much in demand at various functions, where he provided the entertainment with his piano playing.

Besides his widow, Mr. Burke is survived by two sons, Andrew Schroeder Burke and Herbert Byron Burke, both at home; three daughters, Mrs. Lyle Huffman, Woodstock, IL., Miss Beverly Burke, in nurses training at Bethany hospital, Kansas City, KS and Miss Carmen Ann Burke, at home; a brother, Warren Andrew Burke, St. Joseph, and a sister, Mrs. E.P. Turney, Forest City, MO. There is one grandchild, Marsha Lei Huffman.

The body of Mr. Burke is at Chaneys' Funeral Home and this evening will be taken to the family home in Rulo.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church at Rulo. Burial will be in the Rulo Cemetery.
