Johnny was the son of David Spurlock, Sr. and Susanna Hancock. He was named for his grandfather.
He moved to Arkansas when he was 4 years old, first living in Crittenden Co.
About 1846 the family moved to Lawrence Co, Ark, where in 1848 he married Nancy Ann Lingo.

Johnny and Nancy had 7 children: Louisa (1849), Frances (1850), George W. (1851), William Robert (1857), Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" (1854), Virginia, and Stephen Burrell (1860).

Nancy died in 1860, perhaps around the birth of her last child. The next year Johnny married twice-widowed Anna Eliza Estes. Johnny's brother David was married to Anna's sister Mary.

They had 4 children: Charles Jeptha (1863), Martha Caroline (1865), Nancy Drucilla (1869), Eliza Matilda (1872).
Johnny died at the age of 47 in June 1872. The next month his baby, Eliza was born. Then Anna died in Oct and their children were handed out to relatives.
Both were buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Sharp Co, Ark.
