MARTHA EWALD LODGE BREWER

Martha Ewald Lodge Brewer, daughter of Nicholas and Kathryn Ewald, was born in Lucas county, June 29, 1874, and departed this life Feb. 15, at the age of 82 years, seven months and 16 days.

She was united in marriage to James Delvin Lodge, Oct. 9, 1901. To this union were born three children, Mrs. Shirley Altizer of Popejoy, Iowa, Mrs. Nettie Kauffman of Audubon, Iowa and Elmer Edgar, who preceded her in death in 1916 at the age of 11.

Their home was in LaMars and Storm Lake until 1922, then, due to the serious illness of Mr. Lodge, the family moved to Russell, where he passed away in February, 1923.

On Oct. 14, 1925, she was united in marriage to Frank R. Brewer of Russell. Frank and Mattie made their home in Russell until on Aug. 1, 1943, Frank passed away after surgery. Two years ago Mattie suffered a stroke and has been in failing health since that time.

Surviving are her two daughters; a step-son, Warren R. Lodge of Alton, Ill.; two sisters, Miss Jennie Ewald and Mrs. P. F. Sprague, both of Russell, 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Also a host of other relatives and friends.

At an early age Mrs. Brewer accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the M. E. church of which she was an active member as long as her health permitted.

Services were held Sunday, February 17, 1957, at 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church, with Rev. George Paterson officiating and Rev. A. E. Beals assisting. Mrs. Ted Smith and Mrs. Ruth Shirer, accompanied by Mrs. Viva Millicent, sang "In The Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Beyond The Sunset." Interment was in the Russell cemetery.

Pallbearers were Leo Moore, Ted Smith, Vogel Smith, Richard Werts, Ivan Ford and Kenneth LaFavre. Mrs. John Woodman and Mrs. Richard Werts assisted with the flowers.
