Verna attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Ks. and became a teacher. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Gueda Springs, Kansas grades one though eight. She stayed with a family from there by the name of Lawson. They were a very nice family and very successful farmers. Mrs. Lawson packed Verna's lunch every day and their son drove her to school and started the fire in the wood stove. He was really planning on courting her. Except for those younger Coggins' children in the classroom saying they had a big brother who they knew would be glad to umpire the school softball games. And so it began. She met and married H. Merle Coggins. Verna taught there for three years.
Verna and Merle had two daughters and one son and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
