Enlisted as private in Co. C, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 11 August 1862 at the age of 29. Appointed corporal on 30 April 1864. Captured in action at Athens, AL, on 24 September 1864 by rebel troops under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865. Returned to cgompany on 16 June 1865. Mustered Out on 30 June 1865 at Nashville, TN.

Was David R Amsbaugh Whose Death Occurred Tuesday
David R. Amsbaugh, who died yesterday after a week's illness at his home in Windsor, six miles northeast of the city, was a veteran of the civil war, having served for three years in Co. C, 102d O.V.I. He had an excellent war record and spent six months in prison at Cahaba, Ala., after having been captured by the enemy during an engagement. He was persuaded by some of his comrades to attend the reunion of the regiment held in this city a few weeks ago as he was the only survivor of the regiment who had carried the flag and they were anxious to have him present. He was brought to the reunion in an automobile. He celebrated his eightieth birthday anniversary on Sept. 20.
Mr. Amsbaugh is survived by his wife and six children, Mrs. Core E. Hall of Crestline, Elmer, Oliver and Clarence Amsbaugh of this city, Delbert Amsbaugh living near home, and Orin Amsbaugh living in Ashland, also one half brother, Usal Amsbaugh of Abilene, Kan., two half sisters, Mrs. Mary A. Thompson of Wolcottville, Ind., and Mrs. Joanna Mann of this city, and ten grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday afternoon with services at the home in Windsonr at 2 o'clock. Mr. Amsbaugh was a member of McLaughlin post, G.A.R., of this city and the post will attend the funeral, meeting at the G.A.R. club rooms at 12 o'clock Thursday and going to Windsor on the 12.25 interurban car.
