James was born about 1844 in Scott Co, Virginia. He was the son of Corbin Lane and Mary 'Polly' Adams. He enlisted in the 21st VA Infantry, Co D on 8 Jan 1862 and transferred to the 64th on 1 Dec 1862. He was captured at Cumberland Gap on 9 Sep 1863.

Baptized in St James Church.

Enlisted on 8/1/62 at Saltville.
AWOL 2/28/63 and 4/30/63.;
Pres. in arrest 6/30/63.;

Sent to Camp Douglas 9/24/63 where held until 2/17/65 when he died of typhoid fever.

"Claimed to have been loyal, was conscripted, was captured and desires to take the oath of alliegance to the United States and become a loyal citizen."
