James was born about 1844 in Scott Co, Virginia. He was the son of Corbin Lane and Mary 'Polly' Adams. He enlisted in the 21st VA Infantry, Co D on 8 Jan 1862 and transferred to the 64th on 1 Dec 1862. He was captured at Cumberland Gap on 9 Sep 1863.
