The Adams/Kimbrel families have been intertwined going back to the 1700s in Virginia. The descendants of those pioneers slowly came west and settled in Ford County, Kansas in the late 1880's. One of those pioneers was John C. Kimbrel.

John Clarkston Kimbrel was the youngest of nine known children of John J. and Clarissa "Clary" Hayes Kimbrel. He was born on August 7, 1851 in Henry County, Indiana. His father died when he was three years old. The family moved to Missouri in the years following the Civil War.

At the age of 20, John married Emma Catherine Adams. Her parents were William and Thursey Jane Hurley Adams. Emma was born on November 5, 1853. John and Emma were married on December 20, 1871. They were blessed with nine children with one dying in infancy.

In 1910, John and Emma moved into Dodge City. John died in 1910 and Emma in 1923. They are both buried in Concord Cemetery. Eight of their children, their spouses, and some grandchildren are also buried.
